High of 27

Yesterday I braved the elements and headed out to the University of Kentucky Arboretum. Here in central Kentucky the difference in seasons is very pronounced; summer highs reaching 100°F and winter lows nearing 0°F. Consequently the local flora must be able to survive both extremes; another wonder of the biology of our planet.

Some plants have been trimmed back, and others left to wither, patiently waiting for spring to come.

Some even manage to thrive in the below freezing temperatures, persevering through the harsh weather.

The benches are left unattended, only a few committed joggers venture out under the clear cold sky.

The deciduous trees have dropped all but the most stubborn of leaves, while the conifers maintain their needles. Their green a stark contrast to the ever browning landscape.
